Are You FED UP With Fat?
by Dr. Scott Saunders, M.D.
There is a natural chemical that comes from plants that is responsible for more deaths than all other toxins combined and is the primary cause of all the following diseases:
- Heart disease (#1 cause of death)
- Cancer (#2 cause of death)
- Diabetes (#1 epidemic)
- Stroke
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Blindness
- Kidney failure
- Amputations
- Obesity
And, what’s more, this chemical is found in 80% of all the prepared food in the world. Do you try to avoid this natural chemical? We all know what it is, even so we continue to eat more of it.
It is amazing how educational movies can do so much good in the world. I have only seen the trailer, but I’m really excited to see the documentary, FED UP, when it comes out next week. The reason for the excitement is because I’ve been telling my patients the same principles for many years, such as:
- Exercise does NOT bring weight loss.
- The problem (whichever) is the food.
- Added sugar is poisonous.
Sugar is an amazing chemical that has so many effects on the body. Every cell can use it for energy. In fact, it is the preferred energy source. Not only that, sugar is a hormone regulator that changes our metabolism, or how we make energy. Every time we eat sugar our pancreas makes insulin to tell the cells about it.
- Fat cells will make more fat and get bigger.
- Muscle cells store glycogen (the sugar is made into a starch).
- Liver cells make glycogen and stop using fat and protein for energy.
- The cells become resistant to insulin.
- The brain becomes resistant to leptin, and we stay hungry.
- We stop using fat for energy.
- We stop using protein for energy.
Our taste buds are killing us, and we’re enjoying it (sort of)! We don’t have to wonder why our country is fat; we’ve been told so many myths over the past forty years:
- Eating fat makes you fat.
- Eating carbohydrates makes you thin.
- Sugar is a good substitute for fat in “low calorie” foods.
- You should eat 5 small meals per day.
- Exercise can “burn off calories” and make you thin.
It’s about time these myths are dispelled. We need to learn the truth in order to get healthy. These lies have put our whole country on a downward spiral of obesity, metabolic disease, diabetes, and all their attendant complications. As the FED UP movie states, “This is the first generation that has a shorter life-expectancy than their parents.” But it’s not just the shorter life span, it’s all the suffering that gets me. I offer people a way out of suffering… and they decline the offer!
“SWEET!”
Robert was in my office yesterday…again. He comes regularly because he is obese, sick, and dying – but really because he is miserable and wants to feel better, even for just for a few minutes. He’s on large doses of morphine for pain all over. He can’t think clearly to run his business. Also, he has no energy and can hardly get out of bed.
I have discussed Robert’s diet with him many times, but he says he can’t change it. He just likes the taste of sweet.
The power of taste is amazing. The sugar industry doesn’t have a problem selling their products; the only problem they have is, “How to move it to the next level?” People just want more. As a child I heard all the adults around me say things like, “I know I shouldn’t eat this ice cream, but…” and proceed to eat it. Then, I would listen to them complain about how they don’t eat hardly anything, but they’re still fat. If you think about it, is sugar any different from heroin or cocaine? “I know it’s bad for me, but I like it!”
We need to become more aware of what is going on; dispelling the myths and learning the truth about how taste is not the best way to choose nourishing food and become healthy. I think I’ll recommend that all my patients watch FED UP. Knowledge is power. If it’s coming from me, then they can discount it. But, a movie? That’s credibility!
