Home Remedy for Sinus Infections
I have a personal war with allergies and chronic sinus infections. Nasal passage inflammation never disappears and when I get sick, it almost always involves my sinuses.
I just started feeling the signs and effects of a sinus infection. I could feel the sinus pressure and pain coming on for a few days, but was really hoping I could avoid it. But yesterday it hit my full force and this morning I woke up with a sore throat, burning chest (from coughing) and more nasal congestion.
So, I decided to engage in battle with my sinus infection. Time for action – home remedy action!
In the past, my doctor would prescribe antibiotics when I got a sinus infection. They work pretty good, but many of us know the dangers and risk of prolonged antibiotic usage. So, I am pretty excited about combating sinus infections and allergies with natural remedies that I have researched.
Start with Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is my favorite home remedy for sinus infections. ACV helps cure other ailments, but for sinus infections it helps thin mucous to encourage draining. This home remedy gives you a natural alternative to over the counter medications, and it may also prevent you from having to see a doctor for prescription medications. Here is what I did with ACV this morning to treat my sinus infection:
- 2 tablespoons of ACV
- 1 tablespoon of raw liquid honey
- 8 ounces of water
- Microwaved it all together for 1 minute
- Drink!
This may not be a drink for a romantic dinner, but it works for sinus infections! Drink this mixture 3 times a day, and you will begin to see an immediate improvement in your symptoms. The mucous in your nasal passages will begin to thin once you begin taking apple cider vinegar, and this is why it is such a great remedy. As a sinus infection home remedy, apple cider vinegar is one of the best treatments that you can find.
In addition, you may also want to loosen the mucous in your nasal passages by breathing in steam vapors with ACV. I’ve heard of this remedy working for others.
- Boil 1/2 cup of water with 1/8 cup of ACV.
- Pour into bowl.
- Put a towel over you head.
- Inhale the steam through nostrils with covered head over bowl.
- Be careful not to get too close and burn your face!
- Tip: Keep your eyes and mouth closed.
Inhaling the moist air can bring radical relief to their sinus infections. This ACV-steam home remedy really seemed to help fast. It took about 1 minute for it to start boiling, and then within another minute I had inhaled all I could stand. A little bit of apple cider vinegar mixed in with the water can really give the vapor a boost and help with sinus issues. This also worked well to loosen up phlegm and produce some good coughs. The odor is pretty strong and unpleasant, but it really helped loosen things up and thin out mucous – which is key in overcoming a sinus infection.
Ever heard of ice creaming causing a sinus infection? I’ve heard
sinus problems, such as allergies and infections, can be triggered by eating ice cream. In fact, I’ve been eating a lot of ice cream over the past week. There just might be something to this correlation!
So today I’m starting a no-dairy diet for a week, to see if that helps. So far, I’m getting better.
And, this dairy link isn’t too surprising after I studied the blood-type diet. I’m O-positive blood type, and one of the main culprits for allergies is dairy and then wheat (gluten).
I wanted to share this with you in case you or someone you love is suffering from a sinus infection. Give the above home remedy a try and see if it helps! And let me know by commenting on this blog!

Ice Cream certainly will bring on any and all kinds of infections. It would be the sugar in it and the milk sugar in the dairy being the biggest problem. I personally use a nettie pot and do a nasal wash.. I use some herbs designed for the infection and I have even used some pro-biotic powder to rinse through the nasal passages. It burns like fire, but it certainly helps clear away the mucous and foreign bodies of troubles. Horse radish will get to the areas like they are on fire, you feel it right up into your forehead (sinuses) Very healing and usually stops the post-nasal drip that trickles down the back side of your throat that makes the sore throat feeling. This will by-pass that awful part of a cold. I use sinus and lung formulas and very quickly the infection is clearing out and the lungs are expectorating the infectious mucous. Never suppress the cough. It is built in to assist in eliminating the toxins and bacterias that are causing the problem in the first place. ..

Can distiller white vinegar be used?

I’m going to try this right now. It’s interesting that you mentioned that people with O-positive blood types have allergies triggered by dairy and gluten. I am o-positive and have difficulties with both but never realized there was a link. I will definitely look for into that. Thank you for sharing. Now, to get rid of this sinus infection 🙁

Could you microwave the water first before adding the vinegar and honey so it doesn’t affect the properties of vinegar and honey?

I’ve been having chronic sinus problems for over 20 years and I think that i’ve probably tried nearly every medicine prescribed by the doctor (I live in the UK). To no effect. The only thing that works for me when i have cold or flu or during hay fever period and sinuses suffer the most is steaming them over a pan with a mixture of herbal teas (mint, camomile, fennel – whatever I can find in a cupboard at the time) and a towel over my head. Most effective if I repeat the steaming three or four times before bed time. Steaming softens the lining down but also hot temperature health the surface and helps to strengthen the already inflamed surface of the sinuses and makes it stronger to fight an infection or irritants from a hay fever. This home therapy can be used in both cases, as a prevention and as a treatment. Someone mentioned gluten as a cause – couldn’t agree more, I have noticed a correlation in my case as well. As to the ice cream – I don’t really like it myself but can see how it can cause a problem. There is a lot of bacteria in cold milk which is the main ingredient for ice cream, and if your sinuses are already weak, they will be the first ones to ‘go down’. One more useful thing to mention, about 1.5 years ago I replaced carpet in my bedroom with the hard flooring (which I can easily keep clean and dust free) and bought a natural allergy treated down duvet and pillows – best thing I’ve ever done for my nose. Now I wake up every morning, my sinuses are healthy, dry, not swollen and mucus free and I finally enjoy breathing through my nose rather than my mouth. Its amazing what a simple removal of a dust source can do. I hope my experience will help other ‘sinus fellows’ to get them healthy and keep them that way.

Cheryl:
Forget about the “Eat Right For Your Type” Diet. It is a crock of bull. I have had chronic sinus problems too and I have found that Sugar, Gluten and Dairy all make it worse, so I have eliminated all three from my diet, plus all processed foods. Each person is different however, so you have to find which food allergies and intolerances you have. Check out the book “Diet Wise” by Dr. Keith Scott Mumby.
