“[Governor], You have always inspired me but when I heard your ad on TV and then on Radio, I said yes immediately. As soon as I could get to a computer I signed up for the DS [Diabetes Solution] Kit. Only thing I have ever tried that started bringing my blood sugar down almost immediately. I should be almost normal after my 1st 2 wks.! Thank you so much for stepping up and stepping out on a very touchy subject and once again standing up for truth!! You are a truth teller. By the way down 12 lbs already as well. Thank you all. Go [Governor]!!

The recent controversy over a former governor and potential presidential candidate who had endorsed a product about reversing diabetes has spawned debates all over the world. Is diabetes really reversible? Can a person who already has diabetes actually get off of medications that his or her doctor told them they would be on for life?

Rather than haranguing him as if he were selling “snake oil,” this former governor should be praised for doing more for the health of Americans than ObamaCare ever could – without raising any taxes! Just this one act would save millions of lives, and trillions of dollars! A hero is one worthy of emulation, and if everyone took the former governor as his or her hero, we would all be healthier and happier. Isn’t that what leadership is all about?

The Burden of Diabetes

Diabetes is the fastest growing illness in the west. Various estimates put the number at over 90 Million people in the United States with diabetes or pre-diabetes, most of whom don’t yet know they have it. Currently about 9% of the population has type 2 diabetes, and 37% have pre-diabetes[i]. CNN reports that by the year 2020 half the population will have type 2 diabetes, or pre-diabetes.[ii] There has never been, in the history of the world a larger or faster-growing epidemic.

There has also never been a more devastating epidemic. The amount of death and disability caused by diabetes is tremendous. It is the number one cause of death, amputations, dialysis, blindness, and a major cause of disability, due to those complications.[iii]

As a physician, I pored over the literature, searching for something that could reverse this epidemic. The majority of the published literature is not about reversing, or prevention, but rather about maintenance.

Drugs can lower blood sugar, but not prevent complications – people still get kidney failure, amputations, heart attacks, and go blind while on the medications. Click to Tweet.

We needed something that could actually prevent these problems.

In time, I found plenty of evidence that not only could diabetes be prevented, but reversed entirely, avoiding all of the complications.

The Cause of Diabetes

It turns out that we named diabetes wrong. Because the blood sugar was high, we gave type 2 diabetes the same name as type 1, but they are opposite diseases. Insulin is necessary for allowing sugar into most cells of the body, when there is no insulin, those cells don’t get any sugar – and they starve! This is type 1 diabetes. People with this disease waste away, starving to death even though their blood sugar is high. That’s what made insulin such a life saver when it was discovered in the 1920s.

Type 2 diabetes, however, is just the opposite. There is too much insulin so the cells get too much sugar and are choked. They become toxic and die from excessive glycogen, a storage form of sugar. The blood sugar goes up because the cells stop taking in sugar – they already have too much. Eating more sugar just raises the blood sugar more. What’s more, prescription medications, including insulin, only cause more sugar to be stuffed into the cells, and producing more cell death.

The answer to the epidemic of diabetes, it turns out, is to take away the sugar. This allows the cells to use up their storage so they can become sensitive to insulin again, and then blood sugar can become normal naturally. Once that happens, your diabetes is reversed. Medications aren’t necessary, and there will be no further damage to the cells of the kidney, liver, brain, and blood vessels. This is how science cures disease, by learning the true principles and living them.

In 2005 the former governor published a book about his own fight to reverse his diabetes. He elucidated the most important principle surrounding the diabetes epidemic.

Stop!

In order to reverse type 2 diabetes, one must stop putting into our bodies all that sugar – including pasta, rice, corn, bread, potatoes, and sweeteners of all types. Click to Tweet.

fork and knife gravesIn spite of this knowledge, we are still told to eat a diet high in carbohydrates, but look where this has gotten us – a pandemic of diabetes!

The way to reverse this illness is not new information, in fact it is really centuries old.[iv] From Ancient Egypt, Babylon, Greece, and Rome, diet has played a major role in the treatment of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. They all used low-carbohydrate diets.

Because of this, it seems surprising to me that there should be any controversy over the former governor helping to disseminate the proven principles of the prevention and reversal of diabetes. Science completely supports lifestyle as a cause of this illness, as well as the way to reverse it. We now know why it happens, and what to do about it. The former governor’s personal experience is not just anecdotal, it actually is a good example for others to follow. Although, it isn’t necessary to run marathons, but getting in good shape sure does help.

In medical schools we talk about “evidence-based medicine,” or embracing the scientific proof of treatment, instead of just accepting what we’re told. The former governor’s doctors encouraged him to reverse his diabetes with lifestyle changes because that’s the only proven way. Drugs or pills have never reversed a single case of diabetes. At best, they can only control the symptom of high blood sugar.

If we don’t wake up to the truth about diabetes, not only are many people, perhaps the majority of the population, going to suffer needlessly, our whole society will crumble. We cannot support half the population on dialysis, blind, or lame. It’s time we take responsibility and accept the reality that more than half of our population is “digging [our] grave with a knife and fork.”

How do we do that? Well, if you go on the internet and look up www.DiabetesReversalTalk.com you can find out for yourself! Do what this former governor did, and Jim Janz, above. Moreover, I have proven it many times over, with thousands of people now free from the specter of diabetes. I have never found a case of type 2 diabetes that wasn’t reversible.

Updated March 2015:

Barton Publishing was mentioned in the New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, MSNBC, Slate, and a myriad of other publications this week, as we’re wrapping up our endorsement contract with a former governor. Pretty interesting how much politicians are scrutinized and unfairly labeled by the (liberal) media – I am thankful I’m not a politician!!! As much attention we had, we wanted to clarify some things about type 2 Diabetes that the media doesn’t seem to understand. First of all, the American Diabetes Association has ZERO interest in helping reverse the disease (for type 2) – even though it is 100% reversible! It’s sad that the ADA only focuses on managing the disease – which is convenient for the billion-dollar pharmaceutical companies like Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim who fund the “Living with Type 2 Diabetes Program”. The best way to “live with” type 2 Diabetes is to REVERSE IT!! No need for their side-effect riddled drugs if you don’t have the disease anymore!  –Joe Barton
